Ear Cleaners – The Reviews

Often I have seen online people asking for ear cleaner recommendations. We are ¬†all spoilt for choice as there are many brands out there. I believe somewhere out there, one of it would be our personal preference. What I prefer might not be yours. Try the different ones and you’ll definitely find one that you like and suits your pet.

This entry is only base on my experience and personal preference.

Pet Horizon Earrific

Price: SGD16.20 to SGD19.05
My Ratings: 4/5

I personally love this, but the smell can be pungent and not all can take it. It smells like medicated ear solution.

Although it is like a normal ear cleaner. It cleans up the dirtiest ears easily. It also help ear infections to recover faster. This is my #1 favorite.

Chris Christensen Mystic Ear

Price: SGD38
My Ratings: 3

Personally I didn’t really like this. Poured a little into the ear to dissolve the ear wax, bubbles start to form. I have no idea how much solution have I poured into the ear canal or that mostly were just air bubbles.

However, cleaning wise there’s nothing to complain. It works on dirtiest ear so all is well.

Tropiclean Oxymed Ear Cleaner

This is considered a medicated ear cleaner. It helped with my dogs ear infection. It isn’t smelly and cleans dirty ears with ease. Just a little and a gentle swap on the ear canal, the dirt is off. Another personal favorite.

Tropiclean Ear Wash

Price: SGD16
My Ratings: 4/5

For dogs who are allergic to alcohol, you should try this. Tropiclean Ear Wash is alcohol free!

This ear solution smells like coconut to me. Cleaning wise it works just fine. Helps control my Shih tzu’s yeast infection in the ear at bay which I am thankful for. He’s on the road to recovery. A slow process but he’s getting better.

Cleaning wise, it’s good. I have no complain for it all.

Bark to Basics Ear Cleaner

Price: SGD34
My Ratings: 3.5/5

Smell wise, awesome. It contains witchhazel which I read up it’s good. However, the cleaning doesn’t seem to be good to me. For a dirty ear, I had to clean the same area multiple times before the dirt comes off. Which might cause redness to the skin. This is base on my personal experience, thus it may not apply to all user.

#1 All System Ear so Fresh

Price: SGD31.50 to SGD37.45
My Ratings: 3.5/5

Personally this is another good brand for dirty ears. But of course, it works good on non dirty ears too. I have only used it a couple of times and I noticed how fast it dissolve the ear wax for easy cleaning. Something to consider getting if you’re looking for a good ear cleaner. This is one of the ear cleaner I would recommend.

True Iconic Tea Tree Ear Cleaner

Price: RM37
My Ratings: 3/5

This ear cleaner comes in gel form. Not my personal favorite. When squeezed a little into the ear canal to dissolve ear wax, the gel doesn’t really slide but stayed on top like cake frosting. To allow it to enter the ear canal fully, it have to take some time. When I squeezed a little of it onto cotton, somehow it slides better and it will land on the ground. Which kind if waste a little of the ear cleaner.

Cleaning wise is good. It cleans up dirty ear wax better than I expected. Smell is kind of pleasant.

Espree Ear Care

Price: SGD16.15 to SGD27.30
My Ratings: 3.5/5

Recently I bought this to try. Thinking if switching ear cleaner for my grooming business. This ear cleaner isn’t safe for cats, so please do not use it on cats!

Majority of my clients keep dogs so it is ok for me to use. But of course I have Tropiclean Ear Wash on hand for cat clients.

Dematting Spray – The Reviews

Last year while I was volunteering, a fosterer introduced me to a dematting spray which she thinks I should get for my grooming business.

Frankly speaking, I was skeptical at first as I have not use the product before. And I know of another which is good enough for me. I didn’t get it till there was a warehouse sale from the supplier.

Espree – Detangling and Dematting Spray

Price: SGD$21.25 to SGD$25

My ratings: 4/5

If you are asking why is the bottle different if you bought this product previously. Well… There’s a change in packaging.

This can be sprayed before or after shower. It’s like a leave on conditioner with a nice smell to it.

What I did was mainly spray it on the knots, massage it in and leave on for a few minutes before brushing. It made it easier to brush out even the tightest knots that I have come across. But of course, it didn’t work for the severely matted cases which I tried and hoping it will help loosen the knots.

It’s one of the dematting spray that I have tried and loving it that I bought two bottles. And within about a month, I am already using up almost half a bottle! I used it mainly at work and also occasionally on my poodle who sometimes lick herself causing the knots on the fur.

This spray helped reduce fur damage as well as constant brushing on the same area which may cause the skin to be red and sore.

Highly recommend this to owners who wish to brush and do some dematting on their own. But of course, you may use it as a leave on conditioner as well.

Tear Stain Products – The Reviews

Tear stains can be a major problems to owners especially when they have white dogs/cats. There are many reasons to why your pets may have tear stain, but I won’t go into that for this post.

For this blog entry, I will be introducing and leaving my opinions on the tear stain products that I have tried on my white poodle.

Artero Pretty Eyes (Eye Care Lotion)

  • Price: SGD$30.50 to SGD$38.50
  • My ratings: 3.5/5

A friend gave me a little of this solution to try on my white poodle. It did helped remove a little stain and improves my poodle’s tear stain condition. The ingredients were natural extract thus I am willing to give it a try. Thankfully, my poodle didn’t develop any allergic reaction to it. But for a bottle this size, I find it quite reasonable in terms of pricing, but not suitable for owners with a budget.

Tropiclean Facial Cleanser (Tear Stain Remover)

  • Price: SGD$16.40 to SGD$19.50
  • My ratings: 4.5/5

This product is more troublesome to be use. It’s a facial cleanser formula, thus you need to rinse off after leaving it on for about 3 minutes. To prove that this work, I diluted it in a spray bottle. Mix it well before spraying the solution on a facial cotton where I used it to wipe my poodle’s tear stain. Amazingly, the dirt and stain did came off which lightens my poodle’s tear stains after rinsing off the remaining solution that’s on her face.

It’s mild and the ingredients were natural. You may even use it daily to lighten off the stains and maintain cleanliness on your pet’s face. It can be use for muzzle stain too.

  • Price: SGD$15.50 to SGD$17.50
  • My ratings: 3/5

Previously I bought this as it was stated good for tear stain. However, it didn’t really help much despite regular cleaning. But it’s good as normal eye cleaner which help removes dirt around my pets’ eyes. Thus I would recommend it as a normal eye cleaner for owners with breeds like shih tzu, pugs etc. who requires regular eye cleaning.

So far I have only tried these 3 products. I believe there are more that I have yet to try, but most of it I’m reluctant to try due to the ingredients. I am avoiding products that contains antibiotics as long term usage may cause health issues or side effects. While I am still researching for better products on tear stain, if you do have any you would like to recommend me and fellow readers, feel free to leave a comment on this entry.

Slicker Brush – The Reviews

Slicker brush is a must especially for dogs that needs a good brushing. Regular brushing reduce the chances of matted fur. It improves the condition of your pet’s skin and coat as well. Here’s a few brushes that I’ve used or tried and how I feel about them.

Doggyman Soft Slicker Brush

  • Price: SGD$30 to SGD$45
  • My ratings: 4.5/5

It’s the first slicker brush that I’ve tried when I started grooming and I’m loving it. When the description said it’s soft, I was skeptical but it actually is. It’s gentle on the skin too. Even if you were constantly brushing the same area due to a knot, it won’t give any abrasion or rash, but it’s not advisable to do so.

The brush isn’t heavy which is good. Lighter brush won’t tire your arm easily during brushing especially if your pet have a fluffy coat.

Doggyman Pure Pretty

  • Price: SGD$14.35 to SGD$18.10 (prices may vary depending on where you’re getting and the sizes)
  • My ratings: 4/5

Like the above mentioned slicker brush, this is good. I love doggyman brushes as they never fail to amaze me. I got this brush in my equipment set when I enrolled for the professional grooming course. It comes in different sizes.

Gentle on the skin as well. Except that it doesn’t removes mats as easily as the above mentioned slicker brush. But it still serve the same purpose with an extra function where you can remove the fur when you pull down the pink plastic.

Mikki Hard Pin Slicker

  • Price: SGD$13.40 to SGD$20.70 (depending on sizes)
  • My ratings: 2/5

This is by far my least favorite. Although it’s light, it didn’t remove mats easily and it causes abrasion even when brushed lightly. I am not sure about everyone else, but I can’t seem to brush well with this Mikki brush. After a few tries, I gave up and it’s lying in my grooming box.

#1 All System

  • Price: SGD$25 to SGD$35 (depending on sizes)
  • My ratings: 4.5/5

When using this brush, make sure to brush really lightly. And avoid brushing the same area constantly to avoid abrasion. But this brush definitely is easy to brush and removes knots and tangles like wonder. And it gives a very straight fur to poodles after brushing.

Artero Flexible Head

  • Price: SGD$31.20
  • My ratings: 4/5

It’s soft and flexible when brushing. It removes mats easily and gentle on the skin. It’s twin head, which means you can brush the fur using either side. Although I don’t really like the flexible part, but I do love the results it gave after brushing.

Petz Route

  • Price: SGD$25
  • My ratings: 4.5/5

This is my current favorite. It’s light and small, which made it easier for me to brush my poodle’s face. It’s soft and brushes the knots off easily. My arm didn’t get tired from all the brushing, unlike when I was using the Mikki brush. Bought it after a friend recommended it to me when I was looking for a new brush for my poodle. Best buy ever and didn’t regret it.

Paw Pad Trimmer – The Reviews

Trimming off the fur on the paw pads are important. Trimming off creates more friction when your pet walks. Picking the right paw pad trimmer is important as you won’t want one that spoil easily.

Here’s my review of the ones I’ve tried, do note that I use the trimmer on a daily basis and a durable pet trimmer is what I am looking for.

Tife 6800

tife 6800

  • Inbuilt battery. Charging time: approximately 4 hours.
  • Comes with attachment combs, charging cable, trimmer, cleaning brush and oil.
  • Suitable all breed sizes.
  • Price: SGD$80 to SGD$180
  • My Ratings: 4.5/5

The very first paw pad trimmer that I got when I enrolled myself for a professional pet grooming course. It comes with the other equipment needed for the course. I would say, this is durable and worth the money.

Like every trimmer when we use for the first time, it’s sharp making trimming the fur on the paw pads a breeze. It leaves a clean shaved paw pads. Battery life is beyond expectation. It could last the entire day with my constant heavy usage. It last me about 4 years before the inbuilt battery decided to rest for good. But nevertheless, the sharpness of the blade never fail me despite dropping it by accident for countless of times.

Codos KP-3000

codos kp 3000

  • Inbuilt battery. Charging time: approximately 3 hours.
  • Comes with attachment combs, charging cable, trimmer, cleaning brush and oil.
  • Suitable for all breed sizes.
  • Price: SGD$35 to SGD$120
  • My Ratings: 2.5/5

After my Tife 6800 retired, I got myself the Codos KP-3000. I admit that I got it without reading any reviews about it, but more on the color. White looks pure and elegant. Another reason for getting one, I’ve always wanted a white paw pet trimmer. It sort of look more professional.

Charging was relatively faster than the good old Tife. It didn’t disappoint me during the first few months of usage. Sharp and quiet. Battery life could last for the entire day. However, after countless of accidental drop by colleagues, it started to disappoint me. The blade got a little blunt, but still usable. Battery life started to drop a lot and I ended up having to plug in the charging cable to be able to use it. Before it totally died on me, I got myself a new paw pet trimmer.

Joyu PHC-815-S

joyu phc 815 s

  • Requires 2 AA size batteries.
  • Comes with attachment combs, trimmer, cleaning brush and oil.
  • Suitable for all breed sizes.
  • Price: SGD$30 to SGD$80
  • My Ratings: 3/5

This would be my third paw pet trimmer after the Codos KP 3000 failed on me. What I like about this pet trimmer is that I can replace the batteries anytime, I just need to bring a spare. I don’t need to worry that I didn’t charge my trimmer. As for pet owners, you may remove the battery when not in use.

Joyu PHC-815-S is a quiet pet trimmer. It’s quieter than the others that I’ve used. But the noise starts to get louder as I use it often. The sharpness of the blade wore off easily thus I got a replacement within less than a year. After a year and a half, the trimmer started giving me problems. Occasionally it wouldn’t work. At first I thought it was my battery problem, but it wasn’t. Removing the blade and switching on the trimmer, it worked. Placing the blade back, it didn’t. This problem creates more trouble and time consuming in hoping to make it work in order to continue grooming.

Codos CP-5200

codos cp 5200

  • Requires 2 AA batteries.
  • Comes with trimmer, grinder, cleaning brush and oil.
  • Suitable for small breeds. E.g. Chihuahua, Toy Poodle, Shih Tzu
  • Price: SGD$25 to SGD$60
  • My ratings: 4.5/5

A friend recommended this to me and I thought of getting one to try on my own poodle. It gives a clean trim. Small enough for tiny paw pads like toy poodles and chihuahuas. It’s quiet, thus it won’t give your pet a fright.

What I like about this paw pad trimmer is that it comes with a nail grinder cap. You can give your pet the necessary nail grinding to file away the sharp edges or to grind it shorter. Some pets aren’t keen to have their nails trim, but they’re OK to with nail grinder.

So far this doesn’t give me any problems and it’s still working fine. One of the paw pad trimmer that I would give a thumbs up.
